Panthers Disappoint in Preseason Opener Against Jets

The Carolina Panthers opened up their 2023 NFL season against the New York Jets on Saturday night and things didn’t go exactly as planned – or hoped.

Panthers QB Bryce Young, first pick in the NFL draft from Alabama, got the start in leading the offense.  Unfortunately, though, it was not a good series for the rookie.  Young went 4 of 6 for passing gaining only 21 yards and he only played for three series.

The offensive line didn’t play much better as they allowed three hits, which one of them was a pretty good shot after a dart to Carolina WR Adam Thielen.

“It was a lack of execution starting with myself.  I definitely could have done better and us as a unit all have to take accountability. … We have to own this and get better.” – Panthers QB Bryce Young

In fact, the offensive line was so bad that they held a surprise meeting to discuss their shortcomings.

“Yeah, just wasn’t good enough today.  We’ve got to get it cleaned up.  Just got to fix it. That’s on us.” – Panthers Center Bradley Bozeman

Overall, it was not a good showing, but thankfully it’s just preseason and there is plenty of time to fix things before the regular season starts on Thursday, September 7.

Panthers only threw for 113 yards, rushed for a paltry 52, for a grand total of 165 yards with one interception by back-up QB Matt Corral. The final score was 27-0 in favor of the New York Jets.

Next up for the Carolina Panthers are the New York Giants on Friday, August 18 at 7:00pm EST.
