Epic’s New Game “Fortnite” Influenced By Minecraft

Ever since Gears of War 3’s release this past September there has been little news as to what the folks at Epic have been up to. That is until this past Saturday when a tantalizing new trailer revealed what the game makers have in store for players in the, hopefully, near future.

Epic’s new game called Fortnite features characters that appear to be building some sort of fort or structure in preparation for an epic battle against evil monsters and zombies. The actual premise of the game is still unknown, but from what is seen from the trailer, it looks like a defender type of game.

What is known, however, is that some of the influences of the game come from a surprising source, Minecraft. According to Lee Perry, the Project Lead for the Fortnite game, has said recently in a tweet that, “Mincraft was an inspiration for sure.” He also hinted that the game is more of a “building” type of game by saying, “Minecraft let’s you build ANYTHING, we are focusing on constructing ‘buildings’ specifically.”

Mr. Perry continued to drop more nuggets of information by tweeting that Fortnite has a, “Chance of weapon crafting/traps, lvl system, underground exploration, Boss fights, team survival mode, rare loot?’ Chances? High.”

Trying something new that doesn’t involve hordes of Locusts and Tickers running amock is quite admirable and the makers of the Gears of War series are definitely charting into waters unknown with this new type of video game. Whatever their reasoning is, I’m sure the game will not disappoint.
