After coming off of a disastrous loss from Utah last week in the season opener, the Florida Gators were chomping at the bit to get a win and end their four-game losing streak.
Utah was an eye opener for the Florida Gator football program and facing a lower division foe gave them an opportunity to work on fundamentals before facing a tough No. 9 ranked Tennessee team next week.
The Gators looked good against McNeese as Mertz threw for 193 yards with one touchdown. Florida’s ground game, however, stole the show as the top three running backs for the Gators scored at least one touchdown. Montrell Johnson Jr. and Treyaun Webb ran for a total of 190 yards and 2 touchdowns a piece. Travis Etienne had 84 yards rushing with one touchdown.
Gator’s WR Pearsall had an electric day as well as he had 123 yards receiving and one touchdown. The touchdown came from a 50-yard bomb thrown by QB Mertz.
Florida’s defense held the Cowboys to 112 total yards.

Overall, the Gators looked really good against McNeese State and it gave them a chance to correct mistakes made during the Utah Utes matchup last Saturday. The Tennessee game on September 16th, however, will be the true test to see if those issues have been fixed.
Tennessee hasn’t won in the Swamp since 2003 and the Vols are coming to Florida with a chip on their shoulder so the Gators need to be ready.
