It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish and the Army Black Knights started off very slow, but ended with fireworks in their double overtime victory against the Navy Midshipmen.
I knew Army would end up winning this thing as I predicted in my last post. My final score prediction was only four points off, surprisingly!
In this 123rd meeting between these two rivals, the game started off slow, very slow. There wasn’t a score until the second quarter in fact.
Both teams just struggled. Over thrown footballs, miscues, and penalties really brought the game down to a crawl.
Late in the second quarter, however, finally some action! Army’s special teams blocked a punt attempt from Navy and recovered the football in the end zone. Touchdown Army! Navy would eventually respond with a field goal to make the score 7-3 at the half.
The Navy finally responded with a touchdown late in the third quarter with a handoff to RB Anton Hall, Jr. for a 77-yard touchdown. The score ended up being the longest run by the Midshipmen in series history.
Army would eventually tie the game up with a field goal to make the score 10 a piece as time runs out and pushed the game into overtime for the first time in series history.
The Black Knights won the toss and went to work. On the first drive, RB Markel Johnson is handed the football and runs into the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown. Navy would immediately respond with a wide open WR Maquel Haywood for a 25-yard strike, which forced a second overtime.
On the last drive for Navy, though, they attempted to run the football into the end zone, but they fumbled it with Army recovering.
Army Kicker Quinn Maretzki would eventually kick the 39-yard game winning field goal as the Army Black Knights win in a unforgettable football game.
Overall, it was a slow and sloppy matchup. I even thought about switching the channel, but it’s football and the Army-Navy game, so I watch it. As a result, we ended up with a historical game for the ages, an electrifying overtime spectacle, and a win for the Army Black Knights.
Go Army, beat Navy, and go Gators!
