Gators Take Series Against Charleston Southern; Pedroia Talks Retirement and More at Fenway South, and Bruins Beat the Islanders

College baseball is in full swing, literally, and Major League Baseball is about to start as well.  The first of many spring training games start on February 24 with the Rangers vs Royals and Mariners against Padres, for example.

For now, though, college baseball is here and the Florida Gators had their opener on Friday evening against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers.  Both games were decided by the 10-run rule, which is a new rule put in place for the 2023 NCAA baseball season.

The new rule allows teams to win the game if they are leading by 10-runs in the seventh inning, which Florida did in both games on Friday (13-3) and Saturday (16-2).  Florida plays the Buccaneers today at 1pm to close out the series.  The next game will be against the USF Bulls on Tuesday, February 21.

4th Inning Highlights

The Boston Red Sox are now at Fort Myers, Florida gearing up for spring training and Dustin Pedroia was on deck for a rare press conference yesterday.  Alex Cora asked the legendary Red Sox short stop to help with infield practice and drills.  With Xander being traded to the San Diego Padres, Cora is accepting all the help he can get.  Dustin will be a Fenway South until Monday.  Pedroia took a few minutes away from the action for some questions from the media.

Definitely was a good thing to see the Laser Show back in a Red Sox uniform and hopefully he will consider a coaching spot down the road.  Right now, though, he is concentrating on his kids baseball games as he explains in the interview below.

Lastly, the Boston Bruins played the New York Islanders at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts as Jake DeBrusk made his debut since recovering from a hand and lower body injury from the Winter Classic back in January.

DeBrusk definitely made his presence known as he scored a goal and had an assist against the Islanders on Saturday night.

Before the game, I felt that I was obviously focused and determined, but I’ve been waiting for this day for a while…I just wanted to get a goal, just wanted to get the first one.

Fellow Bruins Bergeron, Foligno, and Zacha had a goal a piece as well.  Trent Federic scored twice for Boston.

Next up for the Bs will be Ottawa Senators on Monday at 1:00pm EST.
